Safety devices like security cameras play a huge role in ensuring the safety of a specific area. The most modern type of IoT security technologies is called a CCTV or closed-circuit television. Innovation has made a CCTV connected to the internet. It uses a unique IP address for it to function. The visualized output is then displayed on the monitor of a computer for the people to see what the CCTV can view. An innovative approach made a CCTV different from the use of Image Processing.

Smoke Detection using Image Processing

We all know that CCTV is used for the safety of people. Innovation has made it possible to improve the functions of a CCTV. Professionals have created a system that can use a certain CCTV to detect smoke through the process of image processing. Here’s how to process works:

  1. The CCTV is turned on together with the working system.
  2. The system runs to search for smoke in the area.
  3. Once the CCTV, detects a cloud of smoke, the image will be processed and displayed on the computer.
  4. For safety purposes, the system has a connected alarm system to alert the people in the area.

This system plays a significant role in the safety of people, especially for a large establishment. For example, a fire occurred on a particular floor of a building. Once the CCTV detects the smoke, people will be alarmed, making them aware of the fire on the establishment.

The image processing made the function of a CCTV amazingly. The system was created to detect a cloud of smoke. The algorithm used for this system is mainly by Motion Detection, Color Detection, Shape Detection, and Gaussian Blur. These three algorithms are combined to complete the process of the system and to ensure that it will give an accurate output.

  • Motion Detection: This algorithm is by merely detecting motion in a specific area. Once the CCTV scans a motion, its vision will focus on it then will analyze if it indicates a smoke-like movement. If it does, the system will continue will the next algorithm.
  • Color Detection: Once a motion is detected, the system will analyze the motion if it possesses the color characteristics of a smoke. A smoke is color gray, but sometimes it has a silver particle. The system will now determine if the object it detected is similar to smoke. If it shows movement and has a gray-scale characteristic, the next algorithm will now initiate.
  • Shape Detection: Once the object is confirmed to have a gray-scale image, the system will scan if the image has a shape like a smoke. This process is quite complicated because the shape of the smoke is indefinite. If the system projects a cloud-like shape, the last algorithm will take place.
  • Gaussian Blur: This is the last and most complex algorithm of the system. Once the system confirmed that the object moving has a gray-scaled characteristic and a cloud-like shape, this process takes place. It will decrease the value of the gray color of the image to sharpen the final image of the smoke. Gray particles on the image and its background will slowly be removed so that the system can confirm that it’s smoke.
  • Once the system completed the process, it will trigger an alarm to alert the people on the area about a possible fire incident.

In conclusion, the smoke detection system is a type of safety device that can prevent a possible fire accident. Not only that it can provide safety, but also it can show a visualized output of the smoke. It will also include the location of the smoke. As related to IOT, this works through the network as well. The images that will be processed by the system will be compiled in a particular database on the internet. This safety system should install to most CCTVs to upgrade its function and to ensure the safety of more people anywhere in the world.
