Watch out for these CyberSecurity Predictions this 2018

The year 2017 was jam-packed with security issues: ransomware, social media attacks, and phishing scams. With all these concerns, we’ve all learned a lesson to work hard on cybersecurity. For the year 2018, experts said that there will be bigger breaches, scams, and cybercriminals to watch out for.

On a larger note, there’s still progress in few areas happening for the rest of year. Take a look at some of the cybersecurity predictions we can expect for 2018.

Ransomware
Ransomware attacks have been evident for the year 2017 and unfortunately, there will still be more targeted ransomware attacks for this year. According to F-Secure Labs Researcher Päivi Tynninen, we should expect to see a decreased number of new families and new variants of ransomware. However, companies are bound to face more cybercriminals focusing more on targeted ransomware attacks against them in order to get bigger paydays from victims.

Mobile threats are assumed to be also seen this year. We’ll see first widespread worming mobile phone ransomware that is possibly caused by SMS/MMS.

General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR)
On May 25, 2018, GDPR will finally be effective onwards. This regulation was made by EU with a purpose of delivering data protection legislation in this emerging digital economy. Results of some surveys have shown that many companies, especially U.S. companies, are still not prepared for the said regulation.

Once GDPR is effective, companies are vulnerable to pay fines if ever there’s a breach or complaint. Moreover, those who don’t take GDPR seriously are at risk of a heavy fine.

Cloud security
Cloud security remains to be one of the top priorities this 2018. Cloud environment will become a security target and this may be the year where we can witness cloud security problems. There’s a possibility that because of the larger demands by companies, the cloud may become unsecured and unstable. In order to prevent such, companies should develop and employ a cloud decision model and security guidelines for the private and public cloud.

Biometric Technology
Biometric adoption has expanded over the years and we’ll be seeing it more for the year 2018. From fingerprint to facial recognition, experts said there will be more people and organizations that will be willing to use the idea of using biometrics as identification of people. In this case, we’ll be seeing growth in biometric service and at the same time, however, biometric-access-based exploits may happen for this year.

Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
Artificial intelligence and machine learning will be crucial for cybersecurity this year. Because of lack of people, FireEye predicted that security will see more automation making these two tools significant in battling cyber-attacks. Experts have also said that AI and machine learning capabilities integration will be critical in the coming years, especially for business leaders.

With all these cybersecurity predictions, this indicates how users should be able to protect their privacy and information from these kinds of threats. Learn more cybersecurity measures to keep you safe and secure. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to leave us a message. We’ll be happy to help.
